1. Automatic hyphenation: On the Layout tab, click the Hyphenation button and choose Automatic on the drop-down list. Word hyphenates your document (or a portion of your document, if you selected it.
2. While it’s easy to tell Word that you want to put a hyphen in a particular place, using the Ctrl- “soft hyphen”, it’s deucedly difficult to tell Word that you don’t want to permit a hyphen in a particular place.
3. Microsoft Word gives you the option to allow automatic hyphenation. This evens out left-aligned paragraphs and minimizes the extra spaces between words in justified paragraphs. Hyphenation splits words into syllables separated with a hyphen so the first portion of the word is on one line and the ending portion is at the beginning of the next.

You may have enabled automatic hyphenation, only to find out that hyphenation does not work.

Even if you go to the Options of Word to enable spelling, you will not see your document hyphenated.

To make sure automatic hyphenation is enabled, assuming of course that Word supports hyphenation in your language and you have downloaded the relevant language pack, go to the style you need hyphenated, usually the “Normal” style, and modify it > Go to the “Language” option and un-check (clear) the option “Do not check spelling or grammar.”

Press OK and you will see immediately your text hyphenated. Enjoy!

I have tried it in a long document (900 pages) written in polytonic (ancient and modern) Greek, and it worked without faults and very fast.

A help file is included in the installation, but there should be a warning about Word’s Index.

If you have created an index, after hyphenation all index entries that ‘touch’ a word which can be hyphenated, will be lost. Υou must place index entries to touch a punctuation mark or a small word, a word that will not be hyphenated, like an article. Punctuation marks and empty spaces save the index entries. Experiment with index entries in a selected text before you hyphenate the whole document.

Ancient Greek Hyphenator works also on the 2007 version of Word. Just place it inside the StartUp folder of Word, and you will see a new menu “Add-Ins” which contains the AGH command, to open the Hyphenator options and start hyphenating your document.
